How to Play Battleship
Posted by oscar in BattleShip, Board Games on October 21st, 2009

You have played the battleship as a game and won a number of games, it is now time to improve your game and go to the next level. As an intermediate your approach to the game must change since you are facing better players. Playing a tight game is a strategic approach to the game; this makes it more fun and worthwhile to play.
As an intermediate, it is time to play a better game since this is a different level; higher than the beginner level. Intermediates should learn how to optimize their attacks by learning the squares that may contain the ships. In most cases, most players arrange their battleships to cover the middle of the board game.
When it is your turn to call the co-ordinates, begin with the centre; you can also use a diagonal pattern to give you a good chance to win the game. Consider calling co-ordinates in a checker board pattern as opposed to the adjacent squares approach.
The adjacent squares approach does not always work since player at this level do not arrange their ships together. However, this possibility is not an exception, since some players still will arrange their ships together. Be sure to take care of cheating habits, where the players usually stack their ships together to minimize losses. If you realize this is happening, concentrate on one position and sink as much ships as possible.
When playing your ships, always stay away from the center and corner squares since these are always the target of your opponents; always place your ships arbitrarily as you can. You may have a random pick of your ships and arrange them together. Your opponent will not suspect these since it is not a systematic arrangement and will not bother to search besides the sunken ship.
This strategy should be used occasionally as a special weapon; avoid using it most of the time for your opponent may figure out the trick and you will be in for a big defeat. If it is your turn to attack, don’t go for the corners either, since they may be using the same approach as you as this may amount to waste of important shots.
If playing with the same person all the time, avoid making patterns or images that can be recognized easily. Make it hard for your opponent to guess the game play pattern you use. When playing with the same person, always watch your opponent’s expressions, any change in attitude as well as the pattern of play. Any changes will help you make the decisions that will help you make the right choices; these small details will help you to play to the game to your advantage.
At the intermediate stage, you are on your way to being the master of the game; you must always strive to be the best in what you do. To be an expert in the battleship game, constant game play is required; always try to be consistent on how you approach the game.
