The History of Clue
Posted by oscar in Board Games, Cluedo on October 4th, 2009

“Clue” or” Cluedo” is mainly a board game and now has also transformed into a computer based board game. It has been reported that this game originated in England in the year 1946. It so happened that there were a group of game inventing friends that created this game based on mysteries. A Solicitors’’ clerk who was from Birmingham in England helped in the creation of this game. This game was mainly played between manufacturers of different companies.
Why the name Cluedo?
The name actually was meant to find a mystery that the game holds. It is basically finding clues to solve the mystery. Initially in England its name was “Cluedo” and the people of England called it “Ludo” which was derived from the Latin word “I Play”. It was created by the Waddington’s Games limited that produced a new game and changed the name from “Ludo” to “Cluedo”. It is now played in 40 countries around the world and is still famous by the name “Cluedo”.
This game was created by and credited to Anthony E Pratt until he sold his rights to Waddington’s Games. Due to unforeseen circumstances the release of the game was delayed in the late 1949. In 1949, two brothers known as the Parker Brothers bought the rights. It took a couple of years to develop the game and perfecting it.
Due to World War 2 there was a difficulty in finding material for the game and again it got delayed. It was postponed for 2 years from 1947 to 1949. Over the years, books and films have originated in the name of this game. Even game shows were developed after this game. It can also be played online.
There are different characters in this game and the name of these characters varies from country to country. There is an investigator who is called Colonel Mustard or Mrs Peacock. But due to variations the name is changed and thus the gender change. Mrs Peacock is called Baronesse von Blauw, but she is known as Captain Azuroo which is a name of a man in Spain. In Germany, another character known as the pretty Miss Scarlet is known as Fraulein Ming in Germany. Switzerland has given her a more ordinary name called Evelyne Rose but she has been named as the Cluedo suspect and in the world her name is the first to appear on the cards.
Another character called Mr Plum, is supposed to be the person who is very forgetful but his intentions are murderous. He is known by this name to the Spanish but actually his real name is Dr Mandarino. The Swiss have taken a look at this character in depth and he is known as Doctor Duklel .
There is another character called Dr Black known to the English as Dr. Lemon in Spain. Dr Black is said to be the main character or the person who solves the mysteries. The Swiss call him Monsieur Cluedo or Herr Kludo and this varies from country to country. The Americans call him Sergeant. Caddaver. There are also four suspects in the game namely Madame Rose, Monsieur Brunette , the beautiful Miss Peace and Sergeant Gray. Hence this is how the game originated over the years.
