Rules of Boggle
Posted by oscar in Board Games, Boggle on September 3rd, 2009

The game of Boggle starts by shaking a tray covered with 16 cubic dice and each of them with a different letter which has been printed on either side. The dice is dropped into a four by four tray and in this way only the top part of the cube is visible. Once the dice shows up the numerical it signals the starting phase of the game and this makes the start of the main phase of the game.
Now players have to be careful and observant while searching for words as these words have to be carefully chosen or constructed and all the words made have to be at least 3 letters long. Make sure the player does not use the same letter cube twice. The words can either be singular or plural but eventually the player must make sure the word from each cube is not made twice.
The player is also allowed to use the scrabble dictionary if necessary and this makes the game quite similar to the game of scrabble. Each of the players has to make a note of all the words he or she makes and this can be done with the help of a pen and notepad. A total of 3 minutes is given to the player to make up the words and this shows the games’ extreme importance for time and speed.
This puts the player to a complete mind test as the game is made to be played with caution as wrong spelling too can earn a loss in points. Now after the 3 minutes the game enters into scoring phase and here each player reads off his words and the players compare the number of words made.
Now if a certain player has two or more words that are similar with another player he or she has to make sure that the score is not given for that particular word. After all common words between players are removed the scores are calculated and this accounts for the game being made a little difficult.
So the trick here is to choose a word from a wide vocabulary of words that a player thinks is rare. Now that all the common words are removed the scoring shall begin. The process is relatively easy as the words are scored on account of their length.
Here are the points scoring chart for each letter
- 3 letters= 1 point
- 4 letters=1 point
- 5 letters= 2 points
- 6 letters=3 points
- 7 letters= 5 points
- 8+letters = 11 points
These are just the rules for the standard version of boggle and this game can be played with a ton of different variations but the rules mentioned here are for standard playing tips only. Thus the game is relatively easy to start playing and the game is made with an easy set of rules. The backbone of the game depends upon the vocabulary skills of the player along with his speed skills along with his ability not to make mistakes.
History of Boggle

Board games have been a favourite at parties and family gets-together for years now. With changing trends the board games around us have also changed from the normal snakes and ladders to more sophisticated versions that present the games more as a challenge. Board games are still played by millions around the world and the designers of the game have striven hard to keep up with today’s fast paced generation.
The game of boggle was introduced in the year 1972 by Alan Turoff who started of small with the game. Initially the game hardly even sold anything as the game was not the best in terms of consumer appeal, but time changed the entire perspective of the game and this game has become immensely popular and second to the critically acclaimed scrabble.
The game of scrabble has taken over boggle in every single way but the boggle game has somehow found itself on the charts and this game makes up for a lot of interesting elements that was not found in scrabble. The game of boggle took quite a while in order to become famous and today the game is used as at clubs and many other locations.
The according to a certain Mr Phil who is a senior R and D at the Parkinson Brother (the trademark holders to boggle) says the game was definitely a flop when introduced back in the year 1972 and failed at succeeding at a mainstream commercial success. Many doubts and thoughts later Alan decided to re-release the game in the year 1976. The name Boggle was given to the game in order to compete with the double alphabets in scrabble.
However the initial launch of the game which purely aimed at competing with scrabble was not really a good idea as this could be seen as a major cause in the downfall of the game. Then at the re launch at the year 1976 the game used a different theme in making the game. They used the concept of being cute and friendly to sell the product and this in turn worked wonders for the game.
The relaunch also sported a trendy and stylish advert campaign which was done using the cosmopolitan magazine in mind. This made the game popular and it gained a lot of hype as this magazine was immensely popular. Many of the stories and many other magazine covers were Boggle related and this made the game gain its mainstream success.
The game was popular during the second release as the advert campaigns became extremely popular and this made Alan kick off his successful game sales ever since. Alan had made a lot of money through royalties but he unfortunately could not enjoy any of it as he died at the early of forty from an unknown disease.
However the game and its success continues to live on even today and the game has gained mainstream success and fame over the years and this made the game immensely popular and also close to achieving what scrabble has achieved .

The game of boggle is commonly played every day by many people around the world. Alan Turner’s game has definitely won hearts of many all around the world. The game uses the concept quite similar to scrabble and this makes the game a lot more appealing to many as scrabble has always been in the mainstream success.
Now the game has almost touched 40 years of existence. (37 years to be precise) but there still seems to be a lot of questions and answers related to this game. Some of the common ones are mentioned below.
1) If a player uses a word which others can’t decide acceptable what would be the resulting criteria?
The first and foremost thing to be done while playing boggle is to make sure the dictionary is kept beside the player as this is a handy tool while playing this game. Make sure the dictionary is not forgotten and if for some reason you don’t find a dictionary go ahead and take a vote from all the other players. This is by far the best method.
2) Which version is better? The big boggle (5 letters across the board) or regular boggle (4 letters across the board)?
This is an answer based purely on choice as it’s all up to the consumer and his choice of game play. Make sure it suits the gaming style you prefer. The smaller one has a faster pace than the larger one but the large one is more of a complex game play type so this makes the game a little more challenging. It is all dependant on the game play style of the consumer.
3) Any other games similar to the fun of boggle that can be recommended?
The word game list is a lot but the game that can provide as much as fun as boggle is hard to find but indeed there are a lot of similar games that can be as entertaining as Boggle. The biggest being, scrabble itself as people still think Boggle is a spinoff from this game.
Apart from this the game called taboo is also quite an interesting recommendation for boggle fans. However boggle is a game that is a word game not only made to test the vocabulary but also the speed skill of the individual and in this way it has an edge over the other games.
Therefore the game is made with an intention to be fast and also with the vocabulary skills being on the upfront. Not much has been enquired into this game as all other fields of this game have no other need to be explained further.
Boggle really makes up value for your time and makes sure you don’t need anything else to have a good time. The game is intense fun and fast paced as this game can be over in about 3 minutes. Make sure the game is played with friends or family on a fun filled evening.
