Double Pinochle
Any card-game lover will agree that when it comes to the most challenging game, pinochle takes the cake, the baker and the bakery. But they will also agree that this fast-paced game is a complete entertainer and an addiction hard to give up. The game is complex, no doubt, and has several variations attached to it. Let’s take a look at what the game is all about.
The variations of the game include the different number of players that you choose to play the game with. Originally, Pinochle was meant to be a two-handed game, in keeping with the tradition of the inspirer: the Bezique game. In the two-handed version of the game, the cards are not initially dealt, as is the case with all the other versions and variations.

This original format involves that twelve cards are only partially dealt to the two players in four sets, leaving behind a 24 cards-stock. The hand-building process in this variation is a simple one, wherein the player picks a card from the face-down deck (widow), and if he prefers to keep it, the second card that he chooses goes into the discard pile on an unrecognized basis.
If it is the first one that he chooses to discard, then the second one must be kept with him. Taking alternate turns, each player adds to his set in a similar way, until there are no more cards left. Melds are scored within the first twelve instances of trick-taking, and when the bid-winner declares the trump, the meld points of the players are tallied. The trick process is continued till the players have played all their cards, and is closely played as per the ‘following’ rules.

Pinochle Meld
In the three-handed version of Pinochle, 15 cards each are dealt to the three players, keeping a widow of three cards in the centre. Bidding begins from 300, and sometime seven 250, and continues to increase by multiples of ten. The player who bids the highest melded score is considered to be the winner of the auction. He can then disclose the cards in the widow, and declare the trump. There are certain variations in which the widow cards are held by the winner of the bid. After the melded points of the three players are tallied, the game proceeds to the next round.
In the four-player variation, also referred to as the Partnership Pinochle, the game will entail that a 48-card deck is used, consisting of two sets each of the kings, Queens, Aces, Tens and nines. Two teams of two players each make up this partnership game.

Other variations of the game include the Five-Hand Pinochle, as well as the Double-Deck Pinochle. There is also no rigid consistency about the format in which the players score their points. There are several and more ways to rake up points in pinochle, and you can choose the format that best suits your playing group.Ultimately, the version of the game chosen must be compatible to the nature of the group, and the members’ preferences.
Rules of Pinochle

Pinochle the game that is widely famous was introduced to America by the German immigrants. They made many attempts to enunciate the French term “Binochle”, but it resulted in sounding like “Pinochle”. This game was initially derived from the ancient world game of “Bezique”.
The modern double-handed version of the game Pinochle is a rip-off of Bezique. The 3-handed auction Pinochle is also a variation of Bezique joint with “Skat” a game commonly played in Germany. During the time of World War, the anti-German emotion ran high across the city of Syracuse.
The game and its rules can vary largely and this is a result of the game an its different styles of play. The game can be played from 2 to even 8 players with different rules applying each time.
DEALING- the initial round of the game, player chooses a dealer in a certain manner. Generally whoever picks up the first card. The dealer has to shuffle the card in a manner that is suitable to blend thoroughly. The shuffled cards are kept on the surface of the table to the right side of the dealer and the player to the same side also cuts the deck, most generally towards the dealer.
The person who is dealing will pick up the same deck and will start dealing the cards equally to each player, starting from the left end. Certain players may be reluctant that all cards be distributed one at a time. Some people learn to deal out the three cards at a time, and stick to doing so. However it will not really matter for as long as a player obtains a total of twelve cards.
All the 48 cards have to be dealt by the end. It is often suited to wait for all cards to be dealt and then to pick up the respective hand. Therefore, if a player lacks a suitable number of cards, it can always be re-dealt without going through the process of re-shuffling and again re-dealing the complete deck.
PASSING- When a bidder has been termed a trump, the partner of the bidder has to select exactly four cards in order to pass the table. Precisely four cards has to be sent; not one more and not one less. Once the four cards are selected make sure to stack them in facing down on the table and they have to then be slid across to your partner.
The bidder has to pick up the 4 cards and sort them in his hand and then generally choose a set of four cards to be sent back over the table in a similar manner. These may sometimes be inclusive of some of the cards the player just received.
Through this process the card game of pinochle is generally played and it has to be mentioned that this game can also be played if there are only two people. This makes the game fairly interesting and also much more suitable for an evening. The game of pinochle is also commonly played by the English on a weekend with tea.

Pinochle FAQs
Posted by oscar in Card Games, Pinochle on October 4th, 2009

Here are a few frequently asked questions on the card game Pinochle that you may find useful.
1. What is the term used when:
- A group does not earn points enough so that the bid is reached, that was secured by the bidder who won?
Set. There is no greater gratification than setting one’s opponents.
All of the players pass and the bid has to be taken by the dealer?
- Dumped on. It is always quite exciting when the bid is dumped on you. But not if you have a deal to run with it.
- The blend of points bid by a player after the deal as well as prior to the game play?
Meld. This term is used only when you do not have any other terms left.
Lower valued cards win tricks?
Making it walk. When the aces are used up, kings and queens can win tricks as it is a free for all game.
2. What is a pinochle?
Queen of Spades and the Jack of Diamonds. 40 points can be earned with a regular pinochle while a double of that is worth a whopping 300. So if you have a double pinochle you can be assured you are closer to victory than you think.
3. After winning the bid you have one run in hearts, aces around and a double pinochle. In meld how much is this worth?
55 points. A single run is worth 15 points, aces are worth 10 points and the double pinochle is worth 30 points which totals to 55 points.
4. In a game play, which is the highest ranked card?
Ace. After the ace the 10 is the highest ranked which is strange. This means it defeats nine, jack, queen and king.
5. How many points do you get for a double round of aces?
1000. A double run consists of tens, kings, two aces, jacks of trump and queens and is valued at 1500.
6. What does an initial bid of 51 mean?
Aces around. 51 should be bid only if you have aces around unless agreed otherwise with your partner.
7. After the deal, you find yourself with double aces around and many marriages, but no strong suit or run. Your partner makes a bid of 60 while the right opponent makes a bid of 65. What is to be done now?
Bid 75. If you have a partner who is good at bidding, you should make a bid of 75. After 60, the bids jump increments of 5, so a led bid would be a jump of 10.
8. Your opponent has won the bid by default at 50. A total meld of 10 is shown and the opponent’s partner has shown a total meld of 8. What happens now?
The hand is defaulted. Since the opponent is the dealer and all the other players have passed the hand must, unfortunately, be defaulted and 50 points are to be subtracted from the opponent’s score.
