Rules of TRIVIAL PURSUIT

trivialpursuit90s

TRIVIAL PURSUIT is a board game where the object is to move around the game board by correctly answering trivia questions on general knowledge and pop culture.

The questions are split into 6 categories, with each category having its own identifying color. In the classic edition of TRIVIAL PURSUIT GENUS, the categories are Geography (blue), Entertainment (pink), History (yellow), Arts & Literature (Brown), Science & Nature (green), and Sports and Leisure (orange).

There have been question sets designed for younger players and also for a specific time period. There have even been questions relating to themes like Star Wars, Saturday Night live, and The Lord of the Rings.

The players start in the “hub” of the wheel or center of the board. The players take turns rolling the dice and move their tokens the number of squares indicated by the dice.

They can move in which ever direction they choose. Once the dice lands, a different player draws a card from the pile and asks the player who rolled a question from the card that corresponds to the color. If the player answers correctly, they can then roll the dice again.

If the square is one of the special squares located at an intersection, the player is awarded what is known as a “scoring wedge”, “cheese” or “pie” that represents the color of the square, if they do not already have that color wedge. If the player answers incorrectly, it is the next players turn.

The game continues in this way until a player has collected wedges of all 6 colors, and then moves his or her marker back to the hub. When this happens, the other players select one color and read the question from that category. In order to win the game, the player must answer the question correctly.

If the player does not answer the question correctly, the game continues until that player or another player with all 6 color wheels moves to the hub and answers the chosen category question correctly.

Trivial Pursuit: Tips for Beginners

trivial_pursuit

1.The Game always to the left of the one who has finished playing.( CLOCK_WISE)

2 There is no need to worry if either you or another player reaches the same square, where another is awaiting his next turn. Theoretically, it is possible that the counter tokens of all the six players may be on the same square at the same time. Only the one whose turn has come can play at any time.

3. If you are at a point where you have to choose the direction to turn to, choose the one which will take you in shorter time to the category where you are strong and have better chance to keep scoring.

4. If one of your competitors is closer than you to winning the game, be ready with a question from a category which is most difficult for that player.

5. In the “Know IT All” version of the Game, there is no board. The die is rolled only once to determine the order in which players will be seated, to commence the game.

6. You wouldn’t get a second edge if by chance you end up at the hub a second time. You will just answer your question and proceed further from the base, as normal.

7. Remember that if you reach a category headquarters without completing all the six categories, you get a WILD CARD, and you can choose the category from which the question is to be asked to you. Always choose the one in which you are the strongest.

8. If you are lucky enough to continuously go on answering all the questions and clear the final question at the Central hub also, you have to allow other players to take their turn and try their skill and luck.

If one or more of them reach the same level as you, then you have to take turns to answer one more question as tie breaker. Otherwise, treat the game as drawn among them those who have reached the winning point.

9. Prepare yourself thoroughly for the game. Keep observing minute details in the Press reports, text Books and magazines.

Once you make a forced habit of this for a few weeks, you will be surprised to find that your eyes and ears automatically focus on such details every time you read something or are in a conversation.

10. Practice quizzing with your friends, before entering a competition. Acquire confidence first and then compete. This will reduce the frustration that you may experience on early failures.

11. Read and memorize the rules of the Game thoroughly. This will reduce errors of judgment and ensure smooth passage for you in game.

12. Wherever there are DVD versions of the questions and answers, see them as often as possible, so that your memory of the question Bank and answers can improve.

History of Trivial Pursuit

trivial_pursuit

Once referred to as “the biggest board game phenomena in game history” by Time Magazine, the basic idea was first conceived on December 15, 1979, by Chris Haney and Scott Abbot, both Canadians. Chris was working as a photo editor for the Montreal Gazette and Scott was a sports journalist for The Canadian Press.

They came up with the basic concept of TRIVIAL PURSUIT in just a few short hours: while playing a game of SCRABBLE and just decided to invent their own board game. The board game was not released commercially until 1981.

On November 10, 1981, TRIVIAL PURSUIT was trademark registered and 1100 copies of the game were first published in Canada. Haney and Abbot had by then taken on two more business partners since they first conceived the original idea of the game.

So, with Ed Werner, a corporate lawyer and John Haney, Chris’s brother, they formed the Abbot Company and raised their initial funding by selling five shares on the company for as little as $1000 each. The final artwork for Trivial Pursuit was done by Michael Wurstlin, in exchange for five shares of the company.

The first copies of Trivial Pursuit were sold at a loss because the manufacturing cost for the first copies was $75 per game and the game was sold to retailers for $15 each. The game was licensed to Selchow and Righter a major U.S. game manufacturer and distributor in 1983.

When the manufacturers financed a successful public relations and marketing campaign the game as last became a household name. In North America, the popularity of the game peaked in 1984 when over 20 million games were sold.

The rights of the game were licensed to Parker Brothers (now part of Hasbro) in 1988, after initially being turned down by the Virgin Group. December of 1993, TRIVIAL PURSUIT was named in the “Games Hall of Fame” by Games Magazine.

Another interesting fact is that the game TRIVIAL PURSUIT was involved in a couple of lawsuits shortly after it became successful in the mid 1980’s. These lawsuits were mostly by individuals trying to skim off the top of the games success and were ultimately overturned by the courts.

One man named David Wall from Cape Brenton, Nova Scotia even tried to claim that he was the actual inventor of the game and that Chris Haney stole his idea. No proof was ever found to legitimize his claim and Chris Haney stated that he had never met David Wall.

In 2008, Hasbro bought out the rights for $80 million US. By 2004 nearly 88 million games were sold in 26 countries and manufactured in 17 different languages. Northern Plastics of Elroy, Wisconsin produced 30 million games between 1983 and 1985. In September of 2003, an online version of Trivial Pursuit was launched.

There have been dozens of question sets released for the game. The question cards are organized into themes like in the standard Genus question set, questions in green focus on science and nature.

There have been question sets designed for younger players and also for a specific time period. There have even been questions relating to themes like Star Wars, Saturday Night live, and The Lord of the Rings.
